Ms. Aguiar-Vélez founded Sistemas Corporation in 1983. The company provides customized software and training for engineers, scientists and technical personnel. Her clients include ExxonMobil, Baxter, BASF, Xerox, and Colgate-Palmolive.
Ms. Aguiar-Velez is a member of the Board of Directors of SBLI USA Mutual Life Insurance Company, Inc., where she also serves on the Executive Committee, Finance Committee, and is the chair of the Nominating, Governance and Human Resources Committee. The 70-year old company has more than 290,000 customers and $1.4 billion in assets. In addition Ms. Aguiar-Velez has served on the boards of The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA and CoreStates New Jersey National Bank.
In 2009, Ms. Aguiar-Velez started Escúchame, Inc. (www.escuchame.org). Escúchame's virtual community of Latina experts and entrepreneurs changes the way the world views Hispanics and supports them as they profit from their expertise. Escúchame organizes, showcases, and promotes Latinas as experts, entrepreneurs, speakers, artists and writers. Escúchame provides the infrastructure where Latinas share their knowledge, gain visibility, get paid to speak, and sell their products, books and services worldwide from their own Internet store.
She is listed in Who’s Who among Hispanic Americans, and Who’s Who of American Women. She has been the recipient of numerous honors, among them IBM’s Hispanic Magazine’s Latina Excellence Award for Science and Technology, the Humanitarian Award from the National Council (of Christians and Jews), the 2012 Anna Maria Arias Foundation/LATINA Style Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Charlotte, NC, and the 2011 Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Woman of Distinction Award. She was recently named as one of the country’s Top 100 Diverse Corporate Directors by the Financial Times Agenda Magazine.
Ms. Aguiar-Velez earned her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering with honors from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, and has attended executive education programs at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire and the Harvard Kennedy School, Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is also a 2009 Fellow of the National Hispana Leadership Executive Program.
